Coach Registration Process & Information

We need parents and non-parents to volunteer to coach! No experience necessary! Responsibilities are to run a practice once per week and coach the games. Training opportunity provided!

Coaching Expectations

  1. Parents/Guardians are requested and needed to volunteer to coach. Training is provided; there are many new coaches each season.
  2. All coaches, new or returning, must register as a coach for the new season. Enroll yourself as a volunteer if you would like to coach.
  3. Coaches are asked to also educate themselves on how to best coach youth. MSCR provides some coach’ training. Coaches can request that other parents that have soccer experience assist as possible.
  4. Coaches are asked to manage mismatches, games with a goal differential of 5 goals or more. This can be done by asking the players to use only their non-dominant foot to move the ball, by asking that each player on the team touches the ball once before shooting, by allowing the other team to play with an additional player, or share players between teams. This will help to promote better learning and fair play for beginner to intermediate players that may be on the same team.

Coaches Training

            1. Coach Training (open to new & returning coaches): Fall 2023 Session

            2. Skill Drill Training: New and returning coaches are welcome to attend a training the day before the season begins. This training will teach skill drills that coaches can use with their team to learn the sport. Coaches actively engage in the skill drills to learn. No registration necessary.

            3. Ball Bag: Ball bags can be picked up during the Coach Training Night (*Please RSVP to ensure we have enough supplies!)

Practice

It is best if you can run a practice before your first game, if possible. One hour practices are recommended, 1x per week. The day, time and site of practices are established between the coach and families on that team. City of Madison park sites, when using identified soccer fields, must be reserved directly with the Parks Dept., at a fee. MMSD fields have a first come, first use policy. Many teams practice prior to the game.

Weather Guidelines for Practices: If a heat or inclement weather warning or watch is in effect, DO NOT PRACTICE. If it is hot, use as many water breaks as needed. Water is the best drink to use, sugars dehydrate.
